Words Shape Confidence

Think about two different responses after a mistake.

“You should have passed the puck.”

Or…

“I like that you saw the opportunity. Let’s look at another option next time.”

Both coaches are teaching.

Only one builds confidence while teaching.

Children learn best when they believe their coach wants them to succeed.

Replace Criticism With Curiosity

Instead of immediately giving the answer…

Ask a question.

“What did you see?”

“What were you trying to do?”

“What might work next time?”

Questions encourage players to think.

Thinking develops hockey sense.

Hockey sense develops better players.

Celebrate The Attempt

Not every good decision produces a good result.

Sometimes the puck bounces.

Sometimes a goalie makes a great save.

Sometimes a defender makes an outstanding play.
