Measuring hockey skill development sounds simple. A player practices, completes hundreds of repetitions and hopefully becomes better.
But how does the player actually know?
Doing more stickhandling drills does not automatically mean your hands are improving. Taking 500 shots does not guarantee your release is getting quicker. Spending hours training does not necessarily mean those hours are creating better hockey habits.
That leads to an important development question:
Are you actually improving, or are you simply repeating the same thing more often?

The Question
Most hockey players understand that repetition matters.
Stickhandle more.
Shoot more pucks.
Practice skating.
Work on passing.
Train your edges.
For goalies, repeat movement patterns, tracking drills, recoveries and save selections.
However, repetition raises another question:
How does a player know whether those repetitions are making the skill better?
Without some form of feedback, improvement can become surprisingly difficult to judge.
A player may feel faster without actually becoming faster.
Their stickhandling may feel smoother while the same technical flaw remains.
A goalie might complete hundreds of movements while continuing to repeat an inefficient habit.
Therefore, simply counting repetitions tells us how much work was completed.
It does not necessarily tell us how much development occurred.
The Search
Motor-learning research has studied feedback for decades.
Researchers generally distinguish between two important forms of information.
Knowledge of Results
This tells the athlete what happened.
Examples in hockey might include:
How long a stickhandling drill took
How many targets were hit
Shot speed
Passing accuracy
Skating time
Number of successful repetitions
Those measurements provide an outcome.
Knowledge of Performance
This tells the athlete something about how the movement was performed.
For example:
Was the player handling the puck too far from the body?
Were their eyes constantly looking down?
Was their weight properly transferred during the shot?
Was the skating stride technically efficient?
Did the goalie arrive set before the shot?
Was the player’s body position allowing them to execute the skill effectively?
That distinction matters.
Knowing that a drill took 19 seconds is useful.
Understanding why it took 19 seconds may be even more important.
Measurement Can Make Practice More Meaningful
Technology is beginning to make this type of feedback much easier for hockey players.
Training systems can measure repetitions, speed, accuracy and performance over time. Apps can store results and show whether numbers are trending upward or downward.
That creates something hockey players historically did not always have during individual practice:
a baseline.
Imagine completing a stickhandling test today.
Then again in two weeks.
Again in one month.
And again three months later.
Instead of saying:
“I think my hands are getting better.”
the player has evidence showing whether performance has changed.
The same concept can apply to skating, shooting, passing, strength, conditioning and other measurable skills.
But Numbers Are Not Development
This is where we need to be careful.
The Hockey Resource does not believe development should become a race to produce impressive training numbers.
A player can become exceptionally good at performing one drill without becoming substantially better at using the skill during a hockey game.
That is the difference between:
training the drill
and
developing the hockey player.
Suppose a player becomes much faster at moving a puck through six objects in their basement.
Excellent.
Now ask:
Can they handle the puck while skating?
Can they maintain possession under pressure?
Can they execute with their head up?
Can they recognize passing options?
Can they change direction while protecting the puck?
Can they use those improved hands while processing what is happening around them?
Ultimately, the skill has to transfer to hockey.
Good Repetitions Matter More Than Blind Repetitions
There is another risk.
Practice can reinforce good habits.
Unfortunately, practice can also reinforce bad ones.
If a player performs an inefficient movement hundreds of times, repetition may simply make that inefficient movement more familiar.
That is why quality coaching remains important even as technology becomes better.
A measurement system might tell you:
Your score improved from 72 to 81.
A knowledgeable instructor may notice:
You are still dropping your shoulder, looking down or relying too heavily on one side.
Those pieces of information can complement each other.
Technology provides measurement.
Coaching provides interpretation.
The athlete provides repetition and commitment.
Together, they can create a much stronger development environment.
Should Young Players Track Everything?
Probably not.
Development should remain age appropriate.
U5–U7
Fun, movement, confidence and experimentation should dominate.
Young players do not need hockey spreadsheets documenting every wrist shot. Humanity can survive without a six-year-old performance dashboard.
U8–U10
Simple challenges can introduce measurement without turning hockey into homework.
Can you improve your previous score?
Can you complete the drill with your head up?
Can you use both forehand and backhand?
Progress can become a game.
U11–U14
Players can begin understanding baselines and improvement more meaningfully.
This can be a useful age to measure selected skills periodically and identify areas requiring additional development.
U15–U18
Measurement can become much more sophisticated.
Players pursuing higher levels may benefit from tracking performance, comparing testing periods, analyzing video and building individualized development plans.
Even then, however, numbers should support development rather than control it.
What About Goalies?
Goalies may have even more reason to think carefully about measurable development.
Goalie improvement is often difficult for families to judge because game statistics can be misleading.
Save percentage depends heavily on shot quality, team strength, competition level and game environment.
Therefore, development measurements may need to examine other areas.
For example:
Movement efficiency
Rebound placement
Puck tracking
Recovery speed
Post integration
Skating mechanics
Puck handling
Decision making
Technical consistency
Some of those areas are easier to measure objectively than others.
Video, qualified goalie coaching and repeated testing can therefore become especially valuable.
A goalie should not be judged only by whether the puck went in.
Consistency Still Matters
Measurement does something else that can be surprisingly powerful.
It makes progress visible.
Development rarely happens in a perfectly straight line.
Players plateau.
They struggle.
Sometimes a new technique initially makes performance worse before it becomes better.
Seeing progress over several months can help players understand that development is a process.
For example:
January: 47 successful repetitions
February: 52
March: 56
April: 63
Individual days become less important.
The trend becomes more important.
That can reinforce one of the most valuable habits in athlete development:
consistency.
The Answer
So, should hockey players measure their skill development?
YES — WHEN THE MEASUREMENT ACTUALLY MEASURES SOMETHING THAT MATTERS.
Objective feedback can help players understand whether performance is changing.
However, measurement should not replace coaching, hockey intelligence, creativity or game application.
The strongest development system combines:
Quality repetitions
Useful feedback
Periodic measurement
Qualified instruction
Game transfer
Consistency over time
The goal is not to produce a player who dominates a training leaderboard.
The goal is to produce a better hockey player.

Before beginning another individual training program, ask five questions:
What are we trying to improve?
Define the skill.
How will we measure the starting point?
Establish a baseline when appropriate.
What does good technique look like?
Do not simply chase faster repetitions.
When will we test again?
Allow enough time for development to occur.
Is the improvement showing up in hockey?
This may be the most important question of all.
Because practice should eventually change what the player can do when the puck drops.
That is the real measurement.
