Meet Coach Joey™ — Small Lessons. Big Improvement.
Young Hockey players are constantly being given instructions.
Skate faster.
Keep your head up.
Move your feet.
Keep your stick on the ice.
Find open space.
Make the simple play.
The problem is not always the instruction.
Sometimes it is simply too much information at once.
That is why The Hockey Resource created Coach Joey™.
One Lesson. One Instruction. One Takeaway.™
Coach Joey’s job is simple:
Take one important Hockey habit and explain it in a way a young player can understand quickly.
No long speeches.
No complicated systems.
No ten-minute explanation of something a player needs to remember during a ten-second shift.
Each Coach Joey lesson focuses on one useful idea that players can take directly onto the ice.
The video may only last about 10 seconds.
The lesson should last much longer.
Why Keep the Lessons So Short?
Hockey is a fast game.
Players need instructions they can remember while skating, handling the puck, watching opponents and trying to figure out where everybody went.
That is a considerable workload for a young brain.
Coach Joey keeps each lesson focused on one simple message.
For example:
KEEP YOUR HEAD UP.
STICK ON THE ICE.
MOVE YOUR FEET.
SHOOT WITH PURPOSE.
Each lesson provides a single skill or habit to think about.
Players can then practice it until it becomes more natural.
Fundamentals Still Matter
There are always new training methods, technologies and development ideas in Hockey.
Many of them can be useful.
But players still need the fundamentals.
Skating.
Passing.
Shooting.
Puck control.
Awareness.
Positioning.
Effort.
Teamwork.
Decision-making.
Confidence.
Coach Joey will return to those fundamentals again and again because strong players build more advanced skills on top of simple habits performed well.
Learning Should Still Be Fun
Coach Joey is also part of a larger belief at The Hockey Resource:
MAKING HOCKEY FUN™
Young players should work hard.
They should learn.
They should be challenged.
They should also enjoy going to the rink.
Improvement and fun are not opposites.
In fact, players who enjoy learning are often more willing to practice, experiment, make mistakes and keep trying.
That matters.
Mistakes Are Part of Every Lesson
Coach Joey will never teach young players that successful Hockey means never making mistakes.
Quite the opposite.
Try the skill.
Make the mistake.
Understand what happened.
Try again.
That is development.
Players should gradually become comfortable learning from mistakes rather than becoming afraid of making them.
Who Are Coach Joey’s Lessons For?
The lessons are designed primarily for young and developing Hockey players.
Some will be basic enough for beginners.
Others will become more advanced as the series grows.
Parents and Coaches can also use the lessons as simple reminders.
A 10-second lesson can become something a parent reinforces before practice or something a Coach incorporates into a drill.
The objective is not to replace Hockey Coaches or Hockey schools.
It is to provide small, useful pieces of instruction that reinforce good development habits.
