Why Keeping Your Head Up Matters
Joey – Looking up helps a Player understand what is happening around them.
Before receiving the puck, try to identify:
- Where are my teammates?
- Where is the pressure coming from?
- Is there open ice available?
- What could my next play be?
A Player who begins gathering that information before touching the puck has more time to make a decision.
That can lead to quicker passes, better puck movement, improved awareness, and fewer rushed decisions.
Joey – Look Before You Get the Puck
JOEY – Young Players naturally want to watch the puck.
That is understandable. Puck control takes concentration.
The goal is not to tell developing Players that they should never look down. Instead, Coaches can help Players gradually become comfortable checking the ice around them before and while handling the puck.
A quick look can provide valuable information.
The more often Players practice this habit, the more natural it can become.
JOEY – Coaches Can Reinforce the Habit
This lesson can be incorporated into ordinary Hockey practices.
Encourage Players to:

Coaches can also create drills that require Players to identify a teammate, open space, or pressure before receiving the puck.
