ONE LESSON. ONE INSTRUCTION. ONE TAKEAWAY.™
COACH JOEY – A Player does not need to be the biggest or strongest on the ice to protect the puck.
Good puck protection starts with one simple idea:
PUT YOUR BODY BETWEEN THE DEFENDER AND THE PUCK.
Use your body, feet, stick and movement to make the defender work around you instead of giving them a direct path to the puck.
The skill becomes more advanced as Players get older, but the principle never changes.
Protect the puck. Keep possession. Create the next play.

U5-U7 • U8-U10
Keep the Puck Away From Pressure
Young Players should first learn that they do not have to carry the puck directly beside a defender.
If pressure comes from one side:
Move the puck to the other side.
Keep your body between the defender and the puck.
Continue moving your feet.
At this age, we are building the habit, not asking Players to wrestle opponents along the boards.
COACH JOEY’S 10-SECOND LESSON™
Defender on one side?
Puck on the other.
Keep your feet moving.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
A defender approaches from your left side. Where should you try to keep the puck?
A. On your left side beside the defender
B. On your right side away from the defender
C. Directly between your skates
D. Stop moving and wait
If incorrect:
TRY AGAIN.
Clue: Your body can help separate the defender from the puck.
Correct answer: B
YOU GOT IT!
Keep the puck on the side away from pressure and use your body as a barrier.

U11-U14
Use Your Body and Your Feet
As Players improve, puck protection becomes more than simply moving the puck away from a defender.
Now you can begin using:
- shoulder positioning
- hip positioning
- wider skating stance
- edge control
- changes of direction
- your free arm legally for balance and space
- quick cutbacks
Do not simply stop and absorb pressure.
Keep moving.
Movement forces the defender to adjust and gives you more options.
COACH JOEY’S 10-SECOND LESSON™
Body protects.
Feet create space.
Puck stays away from pressure.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
What makes puck protection harder for a defender?
A. Standing still with the puck exposed
B. Keeping your feet moving while shielding the puck
C. Holding the puck directly in front of the defender
D. Looking down at the puck the entire time
If incorrect:
TRY AGAIN.
Clue: A moving Player forces the defender to keep adjusting.
Correct answer: B
YOU GOT IT!
Moving your feet while shielding the puck makes it much harder for a defender to reach the puck cleanly.

U15-U18 • JUNIOR
Protect Possession With Purpose
At higher levels, puck protection is not just about keeping the puck.
It is about what you do with the possession you create.
A Player may protect the puck to:
- wait for support
- create a passing lane
- escape pressure
- attack the middle
- drive toward the net
- draw a second defender
- create space for a teammate
Elite puck protection combines strength, balance, skating, awareness and decision-making.
The best Players do not protect the puck simply to keep it.
They protect it long enough to create something better.
COACH JOEY’S 10-SECOND LESSON™
Shield the puck.
Read the pressure.
Create the next play.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
At U15-U18 and Junior, what is the main purpose of protecting the puck?
A. Hold the puck as long as possible
B. Avoid passing to teammates
C. Maintain possession long enough to create the next advantage
D. Skate toward the boards every time
If incorrect:
TRY AGAIN.
Clue: Possession is valuable because of what it allows you to create next.
Correct answer: C
YOU GOT IT!
Higher-level Players protect possession so they can create a better pass, shot, attack or Team advantage.

WHY PUCK PROTECTION MATTERS
A Player who can protect the puck gives their Team something extremely valuable:
time.
Time for a teammate to get open.
Time to find a passing lane.
Time to escape pressure.
Time to get toward the net.
Time to make a better decision.
Losing possession immediately ends those possibilities.
Keeping possession creates them.
THE COACH JOEY™ TAKEAWAY
You do not protect the puck by staring at it.
You protect it with:
BODY POSITION.
MOVING FEET.
PUCK PLACEMENT.
AWARENESS.
And as you get older, add one more question:
What am I going to create with this possession?
PROTECT THE PUCK. CREATE THE NEXT PLAY.™
