COACH JANE™ – 10-SECOND HOCKEY LESSON™ – Shoot in Stride

SHOOT WHILE YOU MOVE.™ Shoot in Stride so defenders and Goalies receive fewer clues before the release. Coach Jane™ teaches girls to keep skating while preparing a controlled shot.

Coach Jane™ 10-Second Hockey Lesson™

Presenter script: “Hi, Coach Jane here. Keep your feet moving and learn to release the puck without stopping the play. Move your feet. Move the puck. Shoot in stride.”

Do Not Announce Every Shot

Begin without pressure. Skate at a comfortable pace, carry the puck, choose a target, and release the shot without completely stopping your movement.

Accuracy and balance come before maximum power.

Make the Release Harder to Read

As the skill improves, combine the shot with natural skating rhythm, different release points, and changes of pace. The objective is to reduce unnecessary preparation clues.

5 Smart Ways to Shoot in Stride

Shoot in Stride so the release becomes part of your skating instead of a separate setup. That can reduce the warning defenders and Goalies receive before the puck leaves the stick.

1. Keep Your Feet Moving

Do not stop automatically before every shot. Maintain enough skating rhythm that the release can happen while the play is still moving.

2. Stay Balanced Through the Release

A moving shot still needs control. Keep the knees bent and the upper body stable enough to direct the puck accurately.

3. Prepare the Puck Early

Shoot in Stride by carrying the puck where it can be released without an extra stickhandle or long wind-up.

4. Change the Release Point

Use slight changes in hand position, body angle, or puck location to make the shot less predictable while keeping the feet moving.

5. Read the Goalie Before You Shoot

Movement is useful only if the shot still has purpose. Scan the net, choose a target, and make the Goalie deal with the puck.

Practice Shooting in Stride

Start at a comfortable skating pace and release without coming to a full stop. Add changes of direction and pressure only after balance and accuracy are reliable.

Coach Jane’s Takeaway

Do not always stop the attack before you shoot. Learn to make the release part of your skating.
