Canadian Blind Hockey

Canadian Blind Hockey is a charity that changes the lives of children and youth who are blind or partially sighted by providing Blind Hockey programming, including introductory try-it sessions, development camps, regional and national competitions, and by supporting the Canadian Blind Hockey Teams.

The parasport of Blind Hockey is played by athletes whose vision ranges from legally blind, which is approximately 10% vision, to completely blind. They use an adapted puck that makes noise and is more significant than a traditional puck.

Canadian Blind Hockey programming is made possible by presenting partner AMI—Accessible Media Inc., National Program Partner The CNIB Foundation, and generous donors and sponsors coast to coast.

About Canadian Blind Hockey

Canadian Blind Hockey is the national sports organization for the Para sport of Blind Hockey in Canada. We change the lives of children, youth, and adults who are blind or partially sighted through our programs which include school field trips, youth teams, development camps, regional tournaments, and our flagship Canadian National Blind Hockey Tournament. Our programming spans the country from coast-to-coast while supporting Canadian hockey players who are blind or partially sighted of all ages, from playing on the pond to proudly standing on the podium. Our community includes boys and girls as young as four years old who are taking their very first strides on skates, to the elite members of the Canadian National Blind Hockey Team who proudly wear the Maple Leaf in international competition.Canadian Blind Hockey programs positively contribute to the physical, emotional and mental health of our participants through community building, social recreation, and peer support, while at the same time combatting negative issues common among Canadians with a disability including unemployment, obesity, depression, and social isolation. We are a participant focused, volunteer led, and staff driven national registered charity that relies on sponsorships and donations to provide our life-changing programs.

Thank you for supporting Blind Hockey in Canada, we invite you to join us as a participant, volunteer, donor, or sponsor and become a part of the Canadian Blind Hockey family today.

Mission Statement

Canadian Blind Hockey works to ensure that every Canadian who is blind or partially sighted has the opportunity to participate in the parasport of Blind Hockey from the pond to the podium.

Values: Hockey’s Declaration of Principles

Canadian Blind Hockey believes in hockey’s “Declaration of Principles” as endorsed by Hockey Canada, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the NHL, NHLPA, and 13 other leading hockey organizations. The “Declaration of Principles” reads:

We believe every leader of the sport has the responsibility to inspire stakeholders in an effort to deliver a positive family hockey experience. Hockey participation offers families value beyond making an individual a better player or even a better athlete. The game of hockey is a powerful platform for participants to build character, foster positive values and develop important life skills. These benefits are available to all players, desirable to every family and transcend the game.

Today, guided by our common values, we jointly pledge to the following Principles.

We Believe:

  1. Hockey should be an enjoyable family experience; all stakeholders – organizations, players, parents, siblings, coaches, referees, volunteers and rink operators – play a role in this effort.
  2. Hockey’s greatest value is the role it plays in the development of character and life skills.
  3. All hockey organizations – regardless of size or level of competition – bring value to players and families in their ability to deliver a positive family experience.
  4. Physical activity is important for a healthy body, mind and spirit.
  5. There are significant benefits of youth participation in multiple sports.
  6. Hockey programs should be age-appropriate for all players, accounting for each individual’s physical, emotional and cognitive development.
  7. There is great value in all forms of hockey, both on and off the ice.
  8. All hockey programs should provide a safe, positive and inclusive environment for players and families regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. Simply put, hockey is for everyone.

International Blind Ice Hockey Federation (IBIHF)

Canadian Blind Hockey founded the International Blind Ice Hockey Federation (IBIHF) to grow the Canadian-invented parasport of Blind Hockey into the United States and worldwide.  Canadian Blind Hockey’s goal in international development is to create competition opportunities for the Canadian National Blind Hockey Team. Currently Canada and the United States have the only two national Blind Hockey programs in the world, however representatives from England, Finland, Russia, and Australia have participated in our programs and events and are working to establish programs in their home countries. The goal of the IBIHF is to found a World Championships for Blind Hockey, and to bring the sport to enough countries to be able to apply for inclusion in the Winter Paralympic Games.
