COACH JOEY – Incredible 10 – Second Hockey Lesson

FEATURED IMAGE COACH JOEY

Hockey happens quickly.

A pass can arrive in an instant.

A rebound can appear even faster.

That is why one simple habit can make a major difference for developing Players:

STICK DOWN. BE READY.

Coach Joey’s lesson is simple.

Keep your stick on the ice when you are ready for the puck.

Give your teammate a clear target.

Be prepared to receive the pass.

Stay ready for rebounds around the net.

Why Keeping Your Stick Down Matters

A Player with their stick on the ice is easier to find.

The teammate carrying the puck can see where to deliver the pass.

That can make puck movement quicker and more accurate.

Keeping the stick ready also reduces the amount of time a Player needs to control the puck after receiving it.

Instead of lowering the stick after the pass arrives, the Player is already prepared.

Give Your Teammate a Target

Passing becomes easier when the receiver provides a clear target.

The blade of the stick can show the puck carrier where the Player wants the pass.

That is especially useful in traffic.

Players should not simply stand and wait.

They should move into useful space while keeping their stick available.

Be Ready Around the Net

Keeping your stick down becomes even more important near the goal.

Rebounds often happen quickly.

A loose puck may only be available for a second.

Players with their sticks ready are in a better position to:

  • Redirect a pass.
  • Control a rebound.
  • Finish a scoring opportunity.
  • Receive a quick pass around the net.
  • Keep possession during pressure.

The opportunity can disappear while a Player is still getting ready.

Stick Position Is Part of Being Ready

Players sometimes focus entirely on skating or positioning.

Those things matter.

But good positioning becomes more useful when the Player is also prepared to receive the puck.

Think about the complete picture:

Move into space.

Keep your stick available.

Watch the play.

Be ready for the puck.

That is a simple habit Coaches can reinforce throughout practices and games.

Coaches Can Reinforce the Habit

Coaches do not need a complicated drill to teach this lesson.

Use ordinary passing drills.

Ask Players to present a target before receiving the puck.

During small-area games, remind Players away from the puck to keep their sticks available.

Around the net, reinforce being ready for rebounds and quick passes.

Over time, the habit can become automatic.

Coach Joey’s Takeaway

STICK DOWN. BE READY.

Do not wait until the puck arrives to prepare for it.

Give your teammate a target.

Stay ready for the next play.
