NOT NECESSARILY.

A Hockey goalie can have an outstanding win-loss record, excellent goals-against average and impressive save percentage without necessarily being the best goalie prospect in the league.

Conversely, another goalie can post weaker statistics while playing extremely well behind a struggling team.

That’s why Hockey Goalie Statistics and Scouting must be evaluated in context.

Higher-level scouts aren’t simply asking:

HOW MANY HOCKEY GAMES DID THIS GOALIE WIN?

Instead, they need to determine:

HOW MUCH OF THOSE RESULTS BELONG TO THE GOALIE?

That can be a much harder question.

A Junior goalie playing for one of our teams finished approximately:

32 WINS AND 1 LOSS.

Those numbers looked extraordinary.

However, higher-level scouts recognized something the statistics alone couldn’t explain.

HE WAS PLAYING BEHIND THE BEST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE.

Despite the remarkable record, the goalie did not advance beyond Junior hockey.

That experience raises an important question for every goalie family:

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS ACTUALLY TELL US?

What Did Our Goalie Statistics and Scouting Research Find?

Before publishing this Hockey Answer, we tested our experience against current goalie analytics, scouting information and higher-level evaluation practices.

THE INDEPENDENT INFORMATION STRONGLY SUPPORTED OUR CENTRAL CONCLUSION.

Traditional statistics remain useful.

However, modern goalie evaluation increasingly looks beyond wins, losses and goals-against average.

For example, current analytics can consider shot quality, expected goals, goals saved above average and performance against higher-danger opportunities.

Furthermore, scouting information evaluates technical ability, movement, positioning, tracking, athleticism and projection alongside statistics.

Therefore:

THE STATISTICS ARE PART OF THE EVALUATION. THEY ARE NOT THE EVALUATION.

Why Can Goalie Wins Be Misleading?

A win belongs to the team.

Imagine two goalies.

Goalie A

Plays for a dominant AAA team.

That team:

  • Controls the puck
  • Allows few scoring opportunities
  • Scores frequently
  • Defends extremely well
  • Rarely trails
  • Keeps opponents away from dangerous areas

The goalie finishes 25–3.

Impressive.

Goalie B

Plays for a weaker team.

That goalie regularly faces:

  • Odd-man rushes
  • Screens
  • Rebounds
  • Defensive-zone pressure
  • Breakaways
  • Back-door opportunities
  • High-danger shots

The goalie finishes 14–14.

Which goalie is better?

THE RECORD ALONE CANNOT ANSWER THAT QUESTION.

Why Goals-Against Average Can Mislead Parents

Goals-against average is influenced by more than the goalie.

A strong defensive team may substantially reduce:

Shot volume

Rebound opportunities

Odd-man rushes

Time spent defending

High-danger scoring chances

As a result, the goalie may produce an excellent goals-against average partly because the team rarely allows dangerous opportunities.

Meanwhile, a goalie on a weaker defensive team may face considerably more difficult circumstances.

Modern goalie analytics increasingly try to account for some of these differences because raw goals allowed don’t tell the entire story.

Is Save Percentage Better?

GENERALLY, IT TELLS US MORE THAN WINS OR GOALS-AGAINST AVERAGE.

Save percentage measures how often the goalie stops the shots faced.

Therefore, it removes some of the influence created simply by facing more shots.

However, save percentage still doesn’t tell us what kind of shots the goalie faced.

Stopping 30 routine perimeter shots isn’t necessarily equivalent to facing repeated high-danger chances.

Consequently, even a strong save percentage needs context.

How Does Team Strength Affect Goalie Statistics and Scouting?

ENORMOUSLY.

A dominant team can make a goalie look better statistically.

However, it can also create another scouting problem.

The goalie may not face enough difficult situations for evaluators to answer important questions.

Can the goalie steal a game?

How does the player respond after allowing a bad goal?

What happens when the opponent controls play for five consecutive minutes?

Can the goalie handle repeated rebounds?

How does technique hold up under pressure?

What happens when the defence breaks down?

Those situations reveal things a 6–0 victory may never show.

Could Playing for a Weaker Team Actually Help a Goalie Get Evaluated?

SOMETIMES.

Nobody wants their goalie facing endless defensive breakdowns.

However, a challenging team environment can give evaluators opportunities to see how the goalie responds when the game isn’t easy.

For example, scouts can observe:

Compete level

Athleticism

Recovery

Mental resilience

Positioning under pressure

Rebound response

Ability to make difficult saves

Performance after mistakes

As a result, weaker team statistics don’t automatically mean weaker goalie performance.

Current scouting analysis explicitly warns that junior goalie numbers can be misleading when team structure leaves one goalie facing much more difficult situations than another.

What Are Scouts Actually Watching?

Statistics may get a scout’s attention.

However, once the evaluator watches the goalie, the assessment becomes much broader.

Higher-level goalie scouting commonly considers:

  • Positioning
  • Net coverage
  • Tracking
  • Rebound control
  • Recovery
  • Lateral movement
  • Athleticism
  • Technical efficiency
  • Competitiveness
  • Reading the play
  • Mental response
  • Physical projection

Importantly, current elite scouting reports routinely discuss these characteristics even when a prospect’s traditional statistics aren’t spectacular.

SCOUTS ARE TRYING TO PROJECT THE GOALIE, NOT SIMPLY RANK THE STATISTICS.

Why Does This Matter at U16–U18?

At younger ages, statistics shouldn’t dominate a family’s thinking.

However, by U16–U18, goalies may begin pursuing:

AAA opportunities

Junior camps

Showcases

Combines

Affiliate positions

College pathways

At that point, families naturally begin comparing numbers.

That’s understandable.

Nevertheless, a goalie with superior statistics isn’t automatically the stronger higher-level prospect.

Physical projection, athleticism, team context, technical development and the quality of competition all become part of the discussion.

What Should Parents Ask About Their Goalie’s Statistics?

Instead of simply asking:

WHAT IS THE SAVE PERCENTAGE?

ask:

WHAT CREATED THAT SAVE PERCENTAGE?

Consider:

How strong is the team?

How strong is the league?

What is the quality of competition?

How many dangerous chances does the goalie face?

Does the team control possession?

How does the goalie perform against stronger opponents?

What happens when the team is being outplayed?

Can the goalie make the difficult save when the team needs one?

Those questions provide considerably more information than one number.

Goalie Statistics and Scouting: Our Hockey Answer

GREAT STATISTICS ARE GOOD.

But:

GREAT STATISTICS DON’T AUTOMATICALLY MEAN GREAT PROJECTION.

Our approximately 32–1 Junior goalie is an excellent example.

The record was exceptional.

Nevertheless, scouts evaluated the environment around the goalie and reached their own conclusions.

That’s what families need to understand.

A scout isn’t simply evaluating:

WHAT HAPPENED?

The evaluator is trying to determine:

WHY DID IT HAPPEN?

How much did the goalie contribute?

How much came from the team?

Could those skills transfer to a faster and more difficult level?

What happens when the protection in front of the goalie disappears?

Those questions become increasingly important as the player approaches Junior and college hockey.

DON’T IGNORE THE NUMBERS.

UNDERSTAND WHAT THE NUMBERS ACTUALLY MEAN.
