Every season, thousands of coaches ask the same questions.
How do I help my players improve?
What should we be teaching at this age?
How do we make Hockey more enjoyable?
How do we develop better players without losing sight of what matters most?
They’re important questions.
But after more than forty-five years in Hockey—as a coach, General Manager, team owner, league executive, evaluator, parent, and lifelong student of the game—I believe we’ve often started in the wrong place.
Too often, youth Hockey tries to teach everything at once.
Systems before skating.
Winning before development.
Pressure before confidence.
The result is that players are expected to master skills they aren’t yet ready to learn, while the fundamentals that support long-term development don’t receive the attention they deserve.
At The Hockey Resource, we believe there is a better way.
We believe Player development should follow a progression.
Every age has different physical, emotional, social, and hockey-specific needs.
The priorities at six years old should not be the priorities at sixteen.
Trying to coach every age the same is one of the biggest mistakes in youth Hockey.
Instead, we believe every stage of development has one priority that matters more than any other.
Identify it.
Teach it well.
Build upon it.
Then move to the next stage.
That’s how confident players are developed.
That’s how great teammates are built.
That’s how a lifelong love of Hockey begins.
Our Philosophy
Every age changes priorities.
Every stage of development prepares a Player for the next.
Success isn’t measured by how good a Player is today.
It’s measured by how well today’s development prepares them for tomorrow.
Some players will play house league.
Some will play rep Hockey.
Some will play Junior.
Some will earn college scholarships.
Very few will reach the professional level.
Every one of those journeys deserves the same foundation.
One Priority Never Changes
While every age has a different developmental focus, one priority never changes.
Love of the game.
Children who love Hockey practice more.
They play more.
They stay in the game longer.
They become better teammates.
They create lifelong friendships.
And years from now…
they remember the experience far more than the score.
That is why The Hockey Resource exists.
Not simply to build better Hockey players.
But to help coaches, parents, and organizations create an environment where every child has the opportunity to develop, belong, and discover a lifelong love of Hockey.
Because great Hockey isn’t built in a single season.
It’s built…
one age, one priority, and one Player at a time.
The Hockey Resource Philosophy™
Every age changes priorities.
Every priority prepares players for the next stage.
One priority never changes.
Love of the Game.
