After more than forty-five years in Hockey, I’ve had thousands of conversations with coaches.
Some happened in dressing rooms after difficult losses.
Some happened over coffee before early morning practices.
Some happened in arenas while watching another team’s game.
Others happened during tournaments, league meetings, coaching clinics, and player evaluations.
The conversations were different.
The people were different.
But eventually, almost every conversation arrived at the same place.
Not systems.
Not power plays.
Not line combinations.
Not championships.
Instead, coaches quietly asked questions like these.
“Am I teaching the right things?”
“What should I be focusing on with this age group?”
“How do I help every player improve?”
“How do I keep kids enjoying the game?”
“Why does it feel like everyone expects us to do everything?”
Those aren’t questions about hockey systems.
They’re questions about purpose.
And that’s when I realized something.
The biggest challenge facing youth hockey isn’t a lack of passionate coaches.
It’s a lack of clear priorities.
We Have More Information Than Ever
Today’s coaches have access to an incredible amount of information.
Thousands of practice plans.
Millions of YouTube videos.
Coach certification programs.
Skill camps.
Social media.
NHL breakdowns.
Video analysis.
Artificial intelligence.
Never before has so much hockey knowledge been available to so many people.
Yet many coaches still finish the season wondering if they spent their time teaching the right things.
How can that be?
Because information isn’t the problem.
Knowing what matters most is.
Trying to Teach Everything
One of the biggest mistakes in youth hockey isn’t teaching something incorrectly.
It’s trying to teach everything at once.
A six-year-old doesn’t need to learn everything.
Neither does a nine-year-old.
Or an eleven-year-old.
Every stage of development has different needs.
Different abilities.
Different attention spans.
Different emotional maturity.
Different physical development.
And most importantly…
Different priorities.
When every skill becomes equally important…
Nothing becomes truly important.

Children don’t develop in one giant leap.

The Question That Changed Everything
Years ago, I stopped asking a different question.
Instead of asking,
“What should we teach this season?”
I started asking,
“If we could only accomplish ONE thing this year, what should it be?”
Everything changed.
Practices became clearer.
Coaching became simpler.
Parents better understood our goals.
Players became more confident.
The pressure disappeared.
Because we finally had direction.
Winning Isn’t the Development Plan
Winning games is exciting.
Championships create wonderful memories.
Every team should compete.
But winning has never been a development plan.
Development happens long before the final score is posted.
It happens every time a child becomes a little more confident.
Every time they master a new skill.
Every time they laugh with teammates.
Every time they leave the rink excited for the next practice.
Those moments rarely appear on the scoreboard.
Yet those moments build hockey players.
Before Hockey Skills Come Hockey Confidence
Children don’t become confident because someone tells them they are.
Confidence comes from success.
Success comes from mastering skills.
Skills come from practicing the right things.
In the right order.
At the right age.
That is why priorities matter.
Development isn’t about teaching more.
It’s about teaching what matters most.
