WHERE OJHL PLAYERS ACTUALLY COME FROM – 2

5. Local recruiting still matters

Even with league-wide visibility, local relationships remain important. Teams still recruit heavily from their natural regions and trusted nearby pipelines. Different clubs develop distinct identities: some lean harder into GTA and York Region pipelines, others draw more from eastern Ontario, and others rely heavily on local AAA relationships.

6. What this means for parents

The OJHL player pool is best understood as a blend of top U18 AAA players, prep or academy players, OHL-drafted prospects, previous junior players, and regional recruits signed through local coaching and scouting relationships.

Parent takeaway

Families should not think of the OJHL as a single-lane pathway. It is a mixed recruiting ecosystem. A player can arrive from AAA, prep, another junior stop, or as an already-drafted CHL prospect. The important question is not just where players come from, but what type of player a specific team is currently building around.

Smart question to ask a coach

“What backgrounds make up most of your current roster — AAA, prep, younger OHL-drafted prospects, or returning junior players?”
