(LEAGUE) – (PREP) – New England Fall Prep Hockey League

ABOUT

The New England Fall Prep Hockey League (NEFPHL) established in 2008 with the goal to provide area players with a competitive fall schedule. It has grown to serve over 400 players each season with 20 teams over two divisions. In 2020, the league had players from 68 area Prep Schools and High Schools.

Our coaches own a wealth of experience at various levels. Almost all of them played Prep hockey before moving on to the NCAA and Professional ranks. The league has helped countless student-athletes move on to the Prep School, Junior, NCAA Division 1 and Division 3 levels for 14 years. With an emphasis on academics, the league schedules all games for Saturday Evenings and Sunday Mornings/Afternoons as to not conflict with school priorities.  For local players, we offer weekly practice and off-ice training with Real Speed Sports during all seasons, except winter. The Icenter in Salem, NH serves as the home rinks and training facilities for the NEFPHL.  There are alternate options for mid-week training at Bentley and Boston University.

The NEFPHL U19 and U18 Divisions both offer exposure to NCAA, Junior, and Prep School coaches.  Doug Place, NCAA referee since 2009, serves as Referee in Chief and Director of Player Safety. Our league referees have vast experience at the NCAA and Prep levels. Players are evaluated and placed on a team through tryouts, NDP, coach’s recommendation and/or staff evaluation. Top performers earn call up opportunities. Teams are provided with a traditional 15-18 game schedule from September through early November. On the final Sunday each division will host a single elimination Playoff Tournament and crown a champion.

In 2018, the league introduced “Fully Dedicated” School Teams. Dedicated school teams allow schools to submit a full team in to the league at either the U19 or U18 level. Past full teams include Phillips Andover, Rivers, Groton, Tilton, Holderness, Kimball Union, and Governor’s at the U19 Division. At the U18 Division, full teams who have participated include Central Catholic, and Bishop Fenwick. In addition to those full teams, we have had significant participation from Phillips Exeter, New Hampton, St. Sebastian’s, Belmont Hill, Proctor, Nobles, Pingree, St. Johns Prep, Austin Prep and Arlington HS. The benefits from playing together with classmates in the fall has shown results early in the season for many teams.

Local players selected to the U19 or U18 Public/Catholic teams are expected to practice and train with the team twice weekly. Post-NEFPHL season, a Public Catholic All Star Team is selected to compete against Prep School opponents. Past opponents include Governor’s and Phillips Exeter during their preseason.

Players selected to the NEFPHL Development Program (NDP) are invited to participate in a weekly Sunday skill session hosted by league coaches. This is a players first opportunity to build relationships with the coaches and get familiar with the league. Improving players serve as alternates to all U18 Division teams (formally known as the “player pool”). Players who are proven at the U18 level are added to rosters. In 2019, the NDP saw more than 16 Prep School coaches on its benches during its inaugural Prep Prospects Summer League.
