“Let it be their dream, not yours.”
The Edmonton Oilers recently hosted their annual Hockey Moms trip, where the mothers of each player join the team on a road trip.
This year’s rendition took the group to sunny California for a pair of games. The moms flew in the team plane and watched practice before heading out to explore the city as tourists.
For minor hockey teams, the group of players and parents can often become a second family, travelling to games and practices and watching together.
While on the trip, the Oilers moms were interviewed about what advice they would give to other hockey moms. Here’s what they had to say:
“Let it be their dream, not yours.”
“Just be very supportive and try to talk about something else than hockey.”
“Remember that it’s a team sport and enjoy whatever level they’re playing at because they learn so much from the team sport. I learned so much from my children, all six of them playing hockey.”
“Just enjoy the moment and don’t put too much pressure on the kids. Just let them have fun and what’s meant to be will be.”
“The one thing I’ve learned over the years is you’ve got to be supportive, stay away from anything critical. Always be supportive of everything they do.”
“Just enjoy it and put no pressure on your kid.”
“Just enjoy the ride, it goes very fast. It’s so good for the kids.”
The main theme they shared is to remember that #HockeyIsFun and to let the kids be kids.
