SJHL Showcase – November 13-16, 2023 – Warman, SK.

Welcome to the 2023-2024 SJHL Showcase!

Last season the SJHL saw one of its highest number of players successfully transitioned to a post-secondary hockey opportunity. This is outstanding. It is my hope that the SJHL provides an opportunity to assist all of our players to make successful transitions to post-secondary hockey opportunities including at the USPORT, ACAC and NCAA levels and more successful transitions from hockey to the world of work and life.

This season we are continuing to promote our Stay Here Play Here Campaign and we promise another year of fast, skilled, two hundred-foot SJHL hockey. Hockey is alive and well in our 12 communities!

It is my absolute honour to be in my second season as the Commissioner of the SJHL. With direction from our Board of Governors, the SJHL has created a new strategic plan for the league that focuses on Hockey Operations, Business Operations and the Marketing of our players and our brand. We have also created a new vision for the league:

The SJHL will be western Canada’s premier Junior “A” hockey league known for its exceptional player development and its commitment to its players, its people, and the communities we serve.

Last season the SJHL Board of Governors and I set several goals for our league and for our twelve franchises:

  • Improving the promotion of the league through the social channels/website etc.
  • Innovating the way, the game is officiated to bring a faster and more skilled style of play to the league
  • Developing a strategic plan that is doable and trackable
  • Raising more player and team awareness through Social Media, Relationship with fans, coaches, boards, and communities and
Improving the overall quality of HockeyTV broadcasts in all locales.

This year we are moving the date of our Showcase to November 13th -16th in Warman, SK. I was very pleased with the high turnout of scouts, coaches and schools at our September Showcase last season but the teams and I felt it was too early in the year and our rosters typically were not set nor stable so early in the season. So, we are going a bit later hoping that both our scout turnout and the calibre of play are both enhanced.

This season many of our teams are celebrating 30, 40 and 50 years of SJHL hockey. Hockey is alive and well in our 12 SJHL communities. I am positive that our league and the franchise in your community continues impact our players and your community positively through outreach and through positive player ambassadorship.

Again, this season with the enthusiasm of Jeromy Corrigan and IKS Media, all social media platforms will be coordinated and activated and the SJHL brand and our players will be prominent both inside and outside of the province. FloSports/HockeyTV will also be better leveraged to promote the league, our players, and our brand. We are hoping that you will continue to support our players our community franchises and the SJHL. Once again SaskTel will be featuring our games of the month and SJHL Final Series.

In closing, I want to thank the many scouts and coaches for your interest in our players and in our league. I also want to thank those who watch the SJHL and the SJHL sponsors both new and old for your continuing interest in and support for SJHL Hockey.

I look forward to continuing to work with our teams and Hockey Saskatchewan on the Stay Here Play Here campaign where our aim is to put more Saskatchewan kids in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. I look forward to another year of fast paced, skilled and entertaining season of SJHL Hockey.

Thank you, Canterra Seeds, for joining our sponsorship family. I also want to thank IKS Media for coming aboard and assisting us with sharing our quality product across our great province: Stay Here Play Here.

SJHL Mandate

The SJHL will be Western Canada’s premier junior “A” hockey league known for its exceptional player development and its commitment to its players, its people, and the communities we serve.

Player Development Strategy
The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League remains one of the most successful junior A hockey leagues in Canada. The list of players who have successfully transitioned to future hockey or educational opportunities remains impressive. Success on the local and national stage is the result of many factors including coaching, skill development, training facilities, frequency on the ice, scheduling, our list system competitive parity, recruiting and our player centered philosophy. The SHA and the Saskatchewan Player Development Model, the league’s economic policies and stability of our teams are also contributing factors for success. Our goal is to offer the best development possible for our athletes.

The league features a strong commitment of volunteers throughout our twelve communities. Our players, fans, and volunteers are passionate about their players and franchises. The SJHL has successfully hosted National and International events with immense success, with special thanks to the many volunteers from each community for their commitment to their teams. Our Player Development Success can be attributed to the commitment of our coaches, managers, and the team’s dedication to have successful teams in the SJHL. SJHL communities have hosted successful National events due to the commitment and the strength of their volunteers.

Player and Team Responsibilities
All Member SJHL Clubs and Players enter into agreements to ensure that both parties understand their responsibilities to achieve a positive productive relationship. All teams commit to providing the player with excellent developmental opportunities as students, athletes, and a socially responsible individuals through community outreach and volunteerism. In return, the SJHL and the member Club anticipate that the players will respond in a positive productive manner to all operating policies and procedures. Players will also represent themselves, the SJHL, their teams and their hockey communities in a mature, constructive manner in all public activities.

SJHL Commitment to Player Development
The SJHL has made a commitment to ensure that Saskatchewan players are provided every opportunity to play, develop, and move forward in their hockey ambitions, right here, in Saskatchewan, close to home. The SJHL and the Saskatchewan Development Model has the goal of ensuring that our system will be the development system of choice for our players. The SJHL takes great satisfaction that the registration numbers show this as fact and strive to ensure all players have the choice to stay in Saskatchewan. The SJHL is committed to putting Saskatchewan back into the SJHL.

The SJHL is proud to be a leader in developing the Junior A game in Canada. Collaborating with Hockey Canada and eight other Junior Hockey Leagues to form the CJHL. These leagues use consistent application or rules and policies through the junior A supplement. The Junior A Supplement is a progressive adaptation of the playing rules and subsequent measures of discipline that emphasize skill development.
