Burlington Cougars History
1950s
Founded in the early 1950s, the Burlington Mohawks found their footing in the Central Junior B Hockey League. Following seven seasons in the league that saw two league championships, the Mohawks were transferred to the Niagara District Junior B Hockey League.
1960s
In the Niagara League, the Mohawks were briefly renamed as the Industrials, winning championships in 1963 and 1964 before dropping down to Junior C in the late 1960s.
1970s
The Mohawks jumped back up to the Junior B level, joining the Mid-Ontario Junior B Hockey League. They were in the league for one season before the Ontario Hockey Association shifted them back into the Central Junior B Hockey League.
The Mohawks were renamed the Cougars in 1976.
1980s
In 1981, the Cougars won their first Central League Championship since 1958. They faced the Stratford Cullitons of the Mid-Western Junior Hockey League in the Sutherland Cup Finals. The Cougars won the series, defeating the Cullitons.
In 1987, the Cougars won their fourth and final Central League title.
1990s
In 1993, the Central League was promoted to the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League, which saw the Cougars jumping to the OPJHL.
2000s
In 2007, the Cougars moved out of Central Arena and began playing their home games at the Wave Twins Rinks.
In 2008, the league announced a name change and new logo, rebranding as the Ontario Junior Hockey League.
2010s
In the 2010 season, the Cougars changed their logo and colour scheme to double blue to commemorate the 30th anniversary of their 1981 Sutherland Cup Championship.
In 2014, the Cougars moved out of the Wave Twins Rinks and began playing their home games at Appleby Arena. That same season, the Cougars changed their logo and colour scheme to green and blue.
2020s
In 2021, the Cougars returned to Central Arena nearly 15 years after their last stint on Drury Lane. That same season, the Cougars changed their logo and colour scheme to yellow and blue, launching their new partnership with the Burlington Eagles minor hockey.
