WORCESTER RAILERS JHC COACHING STAFF

EHL HEAD COACH/GM – SEAN BERTONI

Sean Bertoni’s career at Franklin (MA) HS began with a love for both football and hockey, as he grew up playing both sports in his youth. Once Sean was granted the starting goaltender position, he worked to become the backbone to the rebirth of success in the Franklin HS hockey program.

In Sean’s junior year, he sustained a very serious knee injury that required major surgery. After missing the first 15 games of his junior year, he returned in time to lead the Panthers to a 2-1 victory over league power, Canton, and into the state tournament. Sean was given the award for the most dedication to his sport and was also named playoff MVP and overall Team MVP for his senior year.

Sean committed to play his college hockey at UMass Boston, where he was named Team Captain in his junior year. Bertoni then transferred to, and graduated from, Suffolk University. Sean has a Master’s Degree in Education and Applied Behavior Analysis and has spent over 10 years in education.

Sean entered the coaching profession in 2011. In 2014, Bertoni became assistant coach of Oliver Ames HS in Massachusetts, and head coach in 2016. The OA program had three consecutive winning seasons under Coach Bertoni and were contenders in each of those three seasons in the state tournament. He was named Hockomock League Coach of the Year in 2017.

This is Sean’s third season with the Railers, his second as EHL head coach. In his first year as head coach, Bertoni guided the Railers to their first-ever EHL playoff berth, and an opening round series win.

Bertoni-coached teams are known for their workman-like manner, the energy that they put forth, and the detail with which they play. Sean’s commitment to his players and how he and they share the same goals allows his team to play at a high level and receive many options to be recruited at the NCAA level.

Coach Bertoni resides in Franklin, MA with his two daughters Giuliana and Valentina.

IN MEMORIAM – MIKE ADDESA

Known to many in the hockey community as “Coach”, Mike Addesa has served in every capacity in the world of developmental hockey, but takes his greatest pride in his very successful record of working with young student athletes in the pursuit of their dream of furthering their academic and athletic careers as collegiate student hockey players. Over his nearly 5 decade career, Coach Addesa’s ability to evaluate the character, academic capacity, and athletic skill of aspiring collegiate hockey players has built an unparalleled level of trust in his recommendations amongst his vast network of college hockey coaches and recruiters.

Addesa began his college coaching career at Holy Cross, where he elevated the competitive level and prominence of the Crusaders ice hockey program before accepting the position of Head Coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). There he recruited and coached his teams to multiple ECAC titles, and created what many regard as one of the greatest college hockey teams of all time, the NCAA Championship (Frozen Four) winning 1985 Engineers. To date, his teams at RPI hold the greatest majority of the NCAA Division I team records, and boast an astounding 38 game unbeaten streak playing a national schedule during his tenure.

For the next step in his career, Addesa accepted scouting/recruiting positions with the Detroit Red Wings, Calgary Flames, and Vancouver Canucks. Identified as a proven talent evaluator and team builder, Coach was approached by each organization as they were embarking upon the process of rebuilding their player pools. His contributions to each organization’s collective efforts have consistently been followed by growth and increased depth in their talent pool, and significant improvement of their on-ice performance.

He has also been involved in junior hockey since the mid-90’s, in particular, the Junior Bulldogs where he was head coach and GM for over 15 years. Mike Addesa has coached, mentored, and advised student athletes and helped hundreds of pro and college hockey players reach their goals.
