Ownership: Brandt Group of Companies

On March 12, 2021 the Brandt Group of Companies acquired the Regina Pats Hockey Club. Brandt had been a co-owner of the WHL team as a partner in the Queen City Sports and Entertainment Group since the local consortium originally acquired the franchise in April, 2014.

“This is a very exciting day for the entire Regina Pats organization; Brandt has played a key role in supporting and building up our organization over the years,” Regina Pats General Manager John Paddock said at the time. “Especially now, as we look forward to an end to the uncertainty resulting from COVID-19 and its restrictions, it is tremendously reassuring to have the strong backing of the Brandt organization and the Semple family.”

“The pandemic has created exceptional challenges for sports organizations like the WHL and the Pats have felt the effects like everyone else,” said Brandt Group of Companies CEO, Shaun Semple. “At Brandt, we are huge Pats fans and strong believers in the importance of community. Regina is our hometown and we’re committed to ensuring a secure future for our home team.”

History

20201109pats1917

Founded in 1917 as the Regina Patricia Hockey Club, the Regina Pats have been a Queen City tradition for more than a century.

Named for the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, the Pats are the oldest major junior hockey franchise in the world.

The Pats are proud members of the Western Hockey League, having won WHL championships in 1974 and 1980. Along with these league championships, the Pats are four-time Memorial Cup champions, with victories in 1925, 1928 (as the Regina Monarchs), 1930, and 1974.

The Pats storied connection with the Memorial Cup owes both to the club’s four championships, along with Regina’s proud tradition of hosting the event. The Memorial Cup has been staged — at least in part — seven times in the Queen City (shared in 1947, 1957, 1969, 1980 and solely in 1950, 2001 and 2018). The 2018 edition celebrated the centennial of both the Memorial Cup and Pats.

Since 1977 the club has called the Brandt Centre (originally the Agridome) home, where a total of 10 numbers hang from the rafters honouring the team’s very best:

  • No. 1 — Ed Staniowski
  • No. 7 — Jordan Eberle
  • No. 8 — Brad Hornung
  • No. 9 — Clark Gillies
  • No. 12 — Doug Wickenheiser
  • No. 14 — Dennis Sobchuk
  • No. 15 — Jock Callander
  • No. 16 — Dale Derkatch
  • No. 16 — Mike Sillinger
  • No. 17 — Bill Hicke

Exactly 166 Pats have gone on to play in the National Hockey League. In the 2023-24 NHL season, two former Pats players made their NHL debuts with Connor Bedard playing his first NHL game with the Chicago Blackhawks on October 10, 2023 at Pittsburgh and Ryker Evans making his NHL debut with the Seattle Kraken on December 7, 2023 vs. New Jersey.

In the 2022-23 NHL season, Stanislav Svozil made his NHL debut with the Columbus Blue Jackets on April 13, 2023 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

There are currently 11 former Pats who have played NHL games during the 2023-24 season, which include;

  • Kyle Burroughs (D) – San Jose Sharks (Pats, 2012-2017)
  • Dryden Hunt (F) – Calgary Flames (Pats, 2011-2015)
  • Nikolai Knyzhov (D) – San Jose Sharks (Pats, 2015-2016)
